New research suggests that individuals who come off blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.
Published data in a major health publication points out that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users purchasing such medications must be informed of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy is stopped," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
The Reason for the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections explains the amplified weight return.
The injections copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Sustained high doses of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.
Many experts argue that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the treatment is often long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "emphasize the persistent nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have stopped the medication explain a intense return of cravings.
"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly extremely hungry," said a patient.
This difficulty is exacerbated if patients have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Widespread Interest
Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Use is higher among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
